Guide to applying to study medical subjects

The number of international students wishing to pursue a degree in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, and Pharmacy is exceedingly high. As medical degree programs are included in the national allocation procedure, international students first need to find out which institution is responsible for handling their application. This might be the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (Foundation for University Admissions) or the university at which you wish to study.

Other deciding factors are which semester you wish to apply for, and your nationality.

In addition to this, you'll need to pay attention to the following special regulations:

• Bildungsinländer fall into the same admission class as German nationals.

• A Bildungsinländer is an international student who has acquired a university entrance qualification in Germany or at a German school abroad, or who has successfully completed a degree at a German university (requiring at least six semesters). If this describes you, then you'll need to apply to the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung via www.hochschulstart.de.

• Family members of an EU or EEA citizen who are resident in the Federal Republic of Germany fall into the same admission class as German applicants, provided the said citizen still lives and is employed in the Federal Republic of Germany. If this describes you, then you'll need to apply to the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung via www.hochschulstart.de.

Applying to enter the first semester

German-, EU/EEA-, and Bildungsinländer applicants

If your country requires you to take a supplementary examination before studying Medicine, you must pass this examination before applying to study Medicine in Germany. If you want to study Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, or Pharmacy, please apply to:

Assessment of your university entrance qualification and registration:
Once you have been accepted by Hochschulstart, the LMU International Admissions office will assess your university entrance qualification.

Non-EU/EEA citizens

The national allocation procedure reserves a limited number of places for international applicants from countries outside of the EU/EEA. Universities are allowed to assign these places at their own discretion. If you would like to apply for one of these places, please submit your application before the stated deadline to the LMU International Office.

Applying to enter an advanced semester

EU/EEA citizens

EU/EEA citizens who have studied or are currently studying one of the above subjects at a university in Germany, and who would like to continue the same degree program at LMU (carrying on with the semester after the one they completed), can apply to LMU online via the Office of the University Registrar (Unit III.2).

This process exists because these places are assigned locally, and applicants fall into the same admissions class as German nationals and Bildungsinländer applicants.

Deadlines for submission: 15 July for the following winter semester and 15 January for the following summer semester.

Non-EU/EEA citizens

International applicants from a non-EU country who have studied or are currently studying one of the above subjects at a university in Germany, and who would like to continue the same degree program at LMU (carrying on with the semester after the one they completed), can apply to LMU online via the Office of the University Registrar (Unit III.2).

Deadlines for submission: 15 July for the following winter semester and 15 January for the following summer semester.

Recognizing examinations and credits attained from a university abroad

The following applies to all applicants: If you have studied one of the subjects below at a university abroad, and you would like to apply to LMU to continue studying in an advanced semester, the credits you have earned from the university abroad will need to be assessed by the relevant office, which will issue you with a notification of transfer of credits for the semester in question. Please enclose this notification of transfer of credits when you submit your application to the LMU Office of the University Registrar.

Applications which are based on notification of credits or on registration at another German university may only be made for advanced semesters.

The office responsible for officially recognizing study and exam results and for issuing notification of transfer of credits is allocted depending on the subject you wish to study, and also partly on your place of residence and birth.

Exchanging a university place

If you are currently studying one of the above subjects at a different university in Germany, you may apply to exchange your place. You can obtain the necessary forms from the LMU Office of the University Registrar. Please note that deadlines apply for applications!
